Design Team

Erik Shorb, is the General Manager of the Landscape Division at American Plant Garden Center and Nursery.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the College of Charleston in 2001, he found his passion ultimately was within the horticulture industry. Working as a crew leader in the landscape division, Erik quickly developed an eye for detail, strong work ethic, and mastery of the Spanish language. He was promoted to the General Manager position in spring of 2008. He now applies his first-hand experience of the landscape industry to the efficient operation of the Landscape Division.

Donna Evans,
Landscape Designer

Donna has 30 years experience in the horticulture industry. She graduated from University of Maryland, College Park in 1982 with a BS in Ornamental Horticulture & Design. For 18 years, she owned and operated her own landscape design/build company. Donna's design philosophy has two main areas of focus: first is her passion for plants and knowledge of their growth habits; second is the idea that landscapes are extensions of a personal vision and style of the structure, and should be consistent with both. Donna is LEED accredited as a Green Associate.

Pat Wainwright,
Landscape Designer

Pat brings a strong eye for design into her landscapes. She has been a landscape designer for over 10 years, studying at the National Arboretum and Brookside Gardens. Her knowledge of plant material as well as her proven design expertise guarantees that each landscape features the right plant in the right place. She is a member of the Landscape Design Consultants in the National Capital Federation of Garden Clubs. Pat enjoys creating outdoor rooms as well as container gardens.

Susana (Susy) Altmann,
Landscape Architect/Designer

Susy Altmann brings an international perspective to her work as a landscape architect and designer. Her impressive design/build portfolio includes work in the Washington, DC area, Venezuela, the Caribbean Islands, and Israel. With more than eighteen years experience, she has broad expertise in the construction of water features, patios, and other outdoor structures. She also embraces American Plant's "green" philosophy in the design and installation of native plant, rain and roof gardens. Susy has an architecture degree from Universidad Central de Venezuela and acquired knowledge of both tropical and local plant materials from her years of work in the area and her landscape technology studies at Montgomery College. Arrangements for plant installation of plant material purchased at one of our garden centers may be made at the registers. The basic fee for planting — which covers delivery, planting, proper soil amendments, small mulch ring (if applicable) and a two year guarantee — is 60% of the cost of the plant material with a $150 minimum charge for labor. Any additional labor — to remove existing plants, to sod, dig beds, prune, etc. — will be charged at a rate of $150 per hour for a 3 man crew.

Curb Appeal

You don’t have to be a realtor to know that curb appeal adds value to your home’s bottom line. And in these times, we all know that anything we can do to boost the potential sale is too important to neglect. Of course, you don’t have to move to see the potential in improving curb appeal.

The house and garden should always work in harmony. Imagine your house as a painting and the foundation plants the frame. Proper placement of trees and shrubs will act as that frame and anchor the house and add proper scale and proportion.

• Tall, columnar trees draw the eye upward, while looser, leafy trees soften edges.

• Shrubs add visual impact and evergreens add structure and year-round color.

• Specimen trees bring eye-catching uniqueness to your garden.

• Annuals, perennials and ornamental grasses add color and texture. Their colors can compliment, or boldly contrast, the color scheme of your home.

If you are thinking of beautifying your outdoor space, whether to enhance your curb appeal or to revitalize your entire property, call our Landscape Division and our designers will create a landscape that will feature wonderful gardens and inviting walkways, beautiful patios and retaining walls to enhance the beauty of your home.
