American Plant is an inspired garden center, boutique & landscape design/build business that offers unparalled plants, flowers, trees & shrubs. We are your shopping destination for home decor items and personal gifts, as well as a complete line of tools, seeds, soils, & mulches. Our landscape design/build team customizes outdoor living spaces, naturally & distinctively.

A 90-year old locally grown company, American Plant is a thriving and popular garden center serving the entire metro area. With two Bethesda locations and a Landscape Design|Build|Maintain division, the company offers organic and earth-friendly gardening solutions as well as a strong family legacy of service and personal attention.

“When we were children our father instilled in us the importance of respect, politeness and honesty in our work,” said Brett Shorb, who co-owns American Plant along with his brothers Todd and Erik. “Our grandfather built this business on the principle of treating your customers like they are a guest in your own home.” By the time the third generation of Shorbs were young adults, treating clients like their father taught them and his father taught him was second nature.

The commitment to offering environmentally friendly gardening solutions is a business practice started by their father Skip. There was an awakening in the family when their mother was diagnosed with cancer. The effects of chemical pesticides and fertilizers upon both people and the earth became apparent to the Shorb family. American Plant took the leading role in this movement and remains a leader to this day.

“There is a stronger sense of obligation to better serve your clients and take care of your colleagues when you work alongside your family,” said Todd. The Shorbs not only have a commitment to each other as brothers but also to their father, uncle and grandfather who came before them in the business. They believe this generational force will preserve the American Plant legacy as it transitions to the next generation.
